This reminds me of a project I worked on for a Very Big Airplane Manufacturer where--again--trying to avoid retesting and recertification was a high priority. Existing code needed to be migrated with plausible sameness.
Fortunately for my own peace of mind, the software in question wasn't safety-critical. Probably the worst it could do is lock everyone out from the in-flight Wi-Fi while regurgitating roll of printer paper.
